Food Guidlines

Dietary Guidelines are given to us so that we can feel good and stay healthy. The three main guidelines are
-making smart choices from every food group
-mixing up the choices within each food group
-finding a balance between food and exercise

Making smart choices from every food group
It is extremely important to eat every different kind of food so that your body can get all the different types of nutrients that it needs.
Meats have protien, fruits and veggies have vitamines and minerals, grains have carbohydrates, dairy has protein, legumes are complex carbohydrates. We need all of these to function to our fullest potential.

Make sure not to give in when you eat out!!! Find healthy options whether that means bringing foods with or finding healthy restaurants.

Mixing up the choices within each food group

Eating all colors of the rainbow is a good practice to live by.

Red foods are colored by a pigment called "lycopene" which may help reduce risk of several types of cancer. Some foods that contain this include; tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit

Orange/Yellow Foods have a pigment "carotenoids." Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A. This helps the eyes and the lining of the heart, it can also reduce risk of cancer, heart disease and it also helps out the immune system a lot. Eat lots of carrots, butternut squash, pineapple, oranges and sweet corn to have these awesome health benefits.

Green foods have chlorophyll in them and some have lutein in it as well . Lutein is part of what keeps your eyes healthy, it helps reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Green foods are an excellent sources of folate. Folate is a B vitamin that helps reduce risk of birth defects. Some delicious examples of these green fruits and veggies include; green apples, artichokes, asparagus, avocados, green beans, and broccoli.

Blue/ Purple foods contain a pigment called "anthocyanins." This is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage. Blue/purple foods help reduce risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. Memory for aging people is also improved by eating blueberries. Some other blue/purple foods are blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, and raisins.

So as you can see every different food within a food category has something new to contribute to your diet.

Finding a balance between food and exercise

Being healthy isn't solely about what you eat. It's about physical fitness as well. Being physically fit is very important for health, it's what controls your weight. Balancing calorie intake and expended calories are the two things that balance your weight.
